Activities in Elche offer something for everyone and the city also boasts a great range of sporting facilities. The location of Elche puts it within a short drive from the coast and several lakes where a variety of water activities can be enjoyed. Throughout the city's palm groves and gardens are numerous nature trails, perfect for hiking and cycling. With welcoming shade from the palm trees, these trails can be enjoyed by the elderly and young children, even in the summer months. A bit further afield visitors will find several superb 18 hole golf courses and fun mini golf courses.
Elche's residents certainly enjoy their sports, and the city is home to several sports centres and clubs. The Poligono Industrial d'Altabix lies on the outskirt of the city. Here visitors can spend the whole day enjoying a variety of sports and activities. There is a huge sports complex boasting multiple playing fields, sports courts, swimming pool, roller skating rink and a gymnasium. Next to this is Jumplandia Adventure Playground for the young ones and, surprisingly, an ice skating rink. You will also find two gymnastics centres, squash and padel clubs, and a boxing club. For the thrill seeker, the area features Distrito 41 Paintball & Laser Centre and Elche Karting Club.
Another fantastic place to enjoy multiple activities is Elche Palmeral Aventuras. Blending into the surrounding palm groves, this outdoor activity centre has it all. A total of 13 zip-lines and a multi adventure circuit takes centre stage and allows for 120 different game challenges. There is also a challenging climbing wall, boating lake, archery and exiting laser camp. Then you have the palm groves and gardens that spread across the city and along the banks of the Vinalopo River. Here visitors can hike the nature trails or hire a bicycle from the Tourist Information Bureau and cycle.
Most visitors enjoying a holiday in Elche will spend some time exploring the surrounding areas. The picturesque Lake Pedrera lies around 40 minutes drive from Elche and, aside from great hiking trails, boasts two excellent multi-activity centres. One of these, Casa La Pedrera was featured on the British TV series Grand Designs Abroad. The other is Lo Rufete where, if you are taking part in the activities, they offer free use of the swimming pool and picnic, BBQ areas. Horse riding is one of the activities they offer; however there are several other places to enjoy a variety of hacks. El Rancho is one such place where they also offer a choice of accommodation.
For the more discerning visitor, there are around a dozen 18 hole golf courses within 50 minutes drive from Elche. These offer a variety of game challenges and some of them form part of a resort complex. For those who don't wish to travel, Elche City boasts a challenging 9 hole course. What better way to see the magnificent palm groves and surrounding countryside than in a hot air balloon. The venue for the hot air balloon flight is at the Marjal Eco Camping Resort in the little village of Catral. This is just 20 minutes drive from the city and a wonderful activity to enjoy.
During the hot summer months the Costa Blanca is a paradise for water activities. You have the surrounding lakes where you can swim, kayak or try your hand at a bit of fishing. Torrevieja's salt lakes offer a unique experience. Due to the high salinity of the water, you can actually float as if you were in the Dead Sea. Then of course you have the glorious coastal areas. Santa Pola is the closest to Elche at around 20 minutes drive. Here you can enjoy numerous water activities.
The town has some excellent scuba diving operators offering fun dives and many PADI courses. There are many rocky coves along the coastline perfect for snorkelling. Santa Pola is the closest point on mainland Spain to Tabarca Island. Being a Protected Marine Conservation area, the waters and reefs around the island are pristine and make for spectacular diving and snorkelling. From Santa Pola, Alicante or Torrevieja there are thrilling jet ski rides or even tours exploring the pretty coastline. Torrevieja has two marinas where water activities feature highly. There is La Bocana Cable Ski, jet boat, flyboarding, banana boat, parasailing, deep sea fishing and sailing.
