Golf and golfing holidays are popular in Elche, and indeed on the entire Costa Blanca. In recent years the Costa Blanca has increasingly been challenging the Costa del Sol as Spain's golfing coast of choice. One thing they do have in common is fantastic weather. Yes, southern Spain has some of the best weather in Europe where golf can literally be enjoyed all year round. Visitors to Elche keen on a few rounds during their stay have the choice of several surrounding courses.
Elche Golf Courses
Residents and holidaymakers have a great choice of sports facilities within the city. There are several sports complexes offering a selection of sports. These include the Spanish favourite padel as well as tennis, squash, soccer, basketball, lawn bowls and swimming. Most sports centres also feature indoor facilities, gymnasiums and cafeterias. Visitors without transport, or those not wanting to travel too far can enjoy a fun round of golf at the city's excellent 9 hole course.
Escuela de Golf Elche – It's never easy to please everyone in the family during a holiday. The location of Escuela however is perfect for families with different agendas. The course is handily situated next to the Forus Elche Health Club and El Corte Inglés Shopping Mall. These provide alternative activities whilst the golfer in the family can play a round or two at the club.
The lovely 9 hole course blends well into the surrounding landscape and poses a variety of challenges for all experience levels. A picturesque lake comes into play on several holes and there is a well laid out practice area. This includes a driving range, practice greens, putting greens and a chipping and bunker area. Prices are very reasonable, there is a variety of children's games and golfing lessons are available. The pleasant social club has a good selection of drinks and snacks.
Surrounding Golf Courses
With much of Elche's countryside being taken up by its famous and protected palm groves, there really isn't any space for an 18 hole golf course. However, there are several surrounding courses within an easy drive from the city. Some of these form part of a resort offering further facilities.
Font del Llop Golf Resort – This is a beautiful 18 hole course designed around a small river. By integrating the river into the layout has allowed the designers to form a natural water course with five inter-connecting ponds. The course has a par of 72 and each of the greens pose their own distinct personality. Practice facilities include a driving range and large putting green. The lovely Mediterranean style club house has a Pro Shop, equipment storage, changing rooms and a superb restaurant. From the large terrace, 12 of the course's 18 holes can be seen.
Alenda Golf – Completed in 1999, this challenging 18 hole course covers 49 hectares of pristine countryside. It has a length of 6,257 metres and par 72. Golf facilities include a long shot driving range with 25 bays, practice bunker, putting greens and a pitch & putt area. Alenda boasts a golf academy offering courses and individual lessons. These are for adults and children with prices for members and non-members. Individual classes are 1 hour and the course lasts 3 months. The superb clubhouse has a Pro Shop, gymnasium, padel court, Kids Club and restaurant.
La Marquesa Golf – The club has an interesting history, having been in founded 1989 as Club de Golf Quesada. It has gone from strength to strength and changed its name in 1994. The 18 hole course has a par of 72 and poses a challenge for all skill levels with some tricky water hazards. There are a number of facilities including a golf school and well appointed clubhouse. Many players who are visiting on a golfing holiday choose to stay at the nearby Hotel Laguna Spa & Golf. Here visitors can enjoy comfortable accommodation and excellent leisure facilities.
Hotel La Finca Golf & Spa Resort – Forming part of a luxurious five star resort, this 18 hole par 72 course has generous fairways and immaculate greens all offering wonderful mountain views. The well maintained clubhouse offers a modern Pro Shop, equipment hire and restaurant. Should you choose, it is also possible to dine in one of the resort's four further restaurants. Add to these a large swimming pool, poolside bar, luxurious spa, gymnasium and great choice of guest rooms and suites, and you have the complete package for a wonderful golfing holiday.
Vistabella Golf – Set in 34 hectares of wonderful countryside, this is an unusual course. The reason being its layout of only 11 holes. However, these have been configured to allow an 18 hole round with a par of 73 and length of 6,000 metres. The course features testing greens, strategic bunkers, undulating fairways and a large lake. Facilities include a Golf Academy, lawn bowls club and 3 glass walled padel courts. The clubhouse has been built at the highest point of the course, allowing for panoramic views from the restaurant's large terrace.
Orihuela Costa Golf Courses
The extremely popular coastal resort area of Orihuela Costa is located less than 40 minutes drive from Elche. It is a favourite holiday destination with British, Irish and Scandinavian visitors and has large expat communities. The area boasts some of the finest golden sand beaches on the Costa Blanca and a whole host of activities, attractions and entertainment venues. It offers family fun galore and is home to four excellent golf courses, all within a 10 kilometre radius.
Villamartin Golf Club – Located next door to the lively Villamartin Plaza, this is a very popular course. The club had the honour of hosting the 1994 Mediterranean Open which was won by the highly respected Jose Maria Olazabal. It's an 18 hole course with a par of 72 and length of 6,005 metres. It has a challenging layout of hills and valleys with deep ravines coming into play on several holes. Playing the course is a pleasure with shady forest and spectacular sea views. Facilities include a driving range and practice area close to the clubhouse and restaurant.
Campoamor Golf Club – This is another excellent course that forms part of a hotel resort. The 18 hole par 72 course has been challenging experienced golfers since 1988. Practice facilities include a driving range and two putting greens. A variety of equipment, trolleys and buggies are available from the clubhouse, and the resort boasts further superb sports facilities. These include 3 FIFA standard football pitches, 3 tennis courts, 4 padel courts, a 2,000 metre athletics track and a multi-purpose court for sand sports. The hotel complex offers further excellent leisure facilities.
Las Ramblas Golf – You will need to get your thinking cap on to play this course successfully, and will more than likely use most of the clubs in your bag. Located between two ravines, the 18 hole course has a par of 72 and length of 5,807 metres. It is kept in fantastic condition throughout the year and has a driving range and putting green for a bit of practice. At the recently renovated clubhouse players can browse the Pro Shop and enjoy drinks and tasty cuisine in the restaurant.
Las Colinas Golf & Country Club – This is a multi-award winning 18 hole championship course. The par 71 course was designed by the renowned landscape architect Cabell B. Robinson. It extends across an undulating valley between forested hills with wide fairways and perfect greens. Close to the driving range is a recently built short game facility. This is set in an area of 5,000 square metres with extensive playing areas, an immaculate green and two bunkers. The Golf Academy offers varied duration coaching retreats as well as individual and group lessons. Other facilities include the clubhouse, tennis, padel, gymnasium and a children's playground.
